self-esteem in picture books

10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewert, illustrated by Rex Ray

Over a year ago, on my old blog, I posted a series about picture books that deal with bullying in one form or another. Those posts will be appearing on this blog as part of my “Looking Back and Moving Forward” archival re-posts. However, I wanted to focus on one of the books I mention in the series in more detail, looking at more than bullying in my consideration of it. The topic of this book may make some people uncomfortable. In my own life, I have often noticed that it is the things which make me uncomfortable that indicate areas in which I need to grow. The elements of this book which make one person uncomfortable may be for another person a powerful affirmation of self-worth.

Show Me How! — Positive Parental Participation at work

In June of this year,  Susanna Hill hosted a series of guest posts on her blog, all on the topic of self-publishing. I found the post by Vivian Kirkfield particularly interesting and edifying. Vivian has written and published a resource book for parents (and others) — Show Me How! — that, as the subtitle explains, gives ways to build your child’s self-esteem through reading, crafting and cooking. There was a giveaway in conjunction with the post on Susanna’s blog, and to my delight, I was the randomly-selected winner. I’ve been delving into the book since it arrived in my mailbox, and I can tell you, it’s a good, thorough resource for families and others who work with the target age group of age 2-5 (and, in my opinion, it could be used with early elementary school kids, as well). Simeon’s Gift — Perfect Picture Book Friday

Since I interviewed one of the authors of this book, Emma Walton Hamilton, here on my blog on Wednesday, it seemed appropriate to share Simeon’s Gift today. In the interview, Emma mentioned that one of the books she and her mother have collaborated on had its origin in a story they wrote together when Emma was just five years old. That book was Simeon’s Gift.   Title: Simeon’s Gift Authors: Julie Andrews Edwards and Emma Walton Hamilton Illustrator: Gennady Spirin Publisher: New York: Harper Collins, 2003.

Molly’s Family — Perfect Picture Book Friday

The book I’ve chosen to highlight today for Susanna Leonard Hill’s Perfect Picture Book Friday is a departure from my usual book choices focusing on some aspect of the arts. Instead, with Freedom to Marry Day coming up next week (this year on February 14th, coinciding with Valentine’s Day), I’m looking at something that more and more children are experiencing, families led by same-sex parents. This book deals sensitively and wisely with the subject and it is a joy to me to share this book with you. I realize this is a contentious issue for some, but I believe it is an important one.
