August Accountability Check In

This has been such a good month, with the creative juices flowing. I’ll detail what’s happened after the “read more.” It’s been good this month to focus my blog on different things than usual, with my Monday series about access to books for kids and my Friday series looking at some lesser-known middle grade novels. The middle grade series will wind up tomorrow, then it’s on to September. (If you missed it, my preview of September was posted yesterday.) And now the continuing saga of my progress in writing:

Access to Books is Crucial for Kids — Part 4, ONLINE and EBOOKS

These days, I’d be totally remiss if I didn’t mention the role computers and e-readers play in giving kids access to books. There are a plethora of reading opportunities for kids with all the technology available to them these days. There are, of course, traditional books that have simply been morphed into e-books, but there are also books that are created especially for the e-market, apps that allow children to interact with characters and situations and have fun while getting into the “book” experience, and there are also many websites that either enhance a child’s reading experience or help adults find books for their kids. Let’s take a look at some of these, shall we?

Stony Brook Southampton Children’s Literature Conference, July 11-15, 2012

By Word of Beth is back in action! For five days recently, I had the amazing experience of being a part of the Stony Brook Southampton Children’s Literature Conference, part of the Arts Summer at the Stony Brook Southampton University Campus in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. As you can see from this photo, I had the joy of finally meeting Emma Walton Hamilton (center). Emma is the director of the conference. After working on my writing with Emma for two years, and co-administering the Children’s Book Hub Facebook Group with her, it was sheer delight to meet her in person, and find that she’s even warmer and more genuine than I had expected! I also reconnected with Pat Tilton (right), a member of the Children’s Book Hub, whom I met at SCBWI LA (the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) last summer. I’m Dirty! — Perfect Picture Book Friday

Perfect Picture Book Friday is going on hiatus until September. Since that is the case, I wanted to do something a little different today. In July, I’ll be attending a Children’s Literature Conference, and will be studying with author Kate McMullan — so I’ve decided to feature one of Kate’s picture books today. Believe me, it was difficult to decide which of her books to feature, but with summer and sandboxes and digging in the dirt on my mind, I’m Dirty! won out. Title: I’m Dirty! Author: Kate McMullan Illustrator: Jim McMullan Publisher: New York: Joanna Cotler Books/HarperCollins, 2006. Genre: Picture book, fiction
