Camera’s Rolling — for Video Idiot Boot Camp

3d Directors chair under the spotlightThere are times when I’ve wondered what it would be like to be a film producer/director — to select the script, be involved in casting the actors, determine the best shots, encourage and inspire the actors to give the best performance in order to portray what I believe the script has to offer the public, to get it all on film and then to carefully work it all together to make a film I could be proud of. In another lifetime, I’d like to do that…

In the meantime, I’m getting a chance to experiment with these things on a small scale in Katie Davis’s Video Idiot Boot Camp.

Video Idiot Boot Camp is an 8 lesson online/home study course that teaches you the basics of making videos. It is geared specifically towards writers and the need of writers these days to have videos on their websites.

I am having so much fun doing this course, and I am learning so much! I knew it would be valuable, but I hadn’t really begun to see the possibilities until I got into it. In each lesson, Katie walks us through the course material through an introductory video, video labs, and written and online exercises. We get to see how things are done, and we get to practice on our own — and as each lesson builds on the one before, we’re each working toward making our own video. I suspect the video we each make for the class will be just the first of many.

And yes, each of us gets to write, direct, star, edit — the class covers the entire process. It’s exciting to see what unfolds! (Note: there is no set beginning or ending time for the course — you sign up and receive the lessons by email at regular intervals, but you can do the lessons on your own timing.)

But don’t just take my word for how good this course is,

take a look at this video in which Katie’s alter ego, the Fairy Vid Mother, explains what the course includes:

And now, I need to get back to working on my video…

  1. So glad you’re having fun with this, Beth! I’m signed up and receiving the lessons, but I haven’t had 2 seconds together to pay any attention to them. I can’t wait to dig in and learn all these things you’ve already soaked up! Looking forward to seeing your videos! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Mary! I love learning new things, and this is definitely something with all kinds of possibilities.
